The Heat Problem
The molecule doing most of the work against UVA radiation is called avobenzone. It is genuinely effective — when it is intact. However, avobenzone is photounstable; the same UV radiation it absorbs drives a chemical reaction that transforms it into a form that cannot protect your skin.
Research has shown that prolonged sunlight exposure significantly degrades avobenzone. Heat accelerates this process further, particularly inside enclosed environments such as vehicles where temperatures can exceed 55°C.
Research has shown that temperatures above 25°C significantly accelerate this breakdown. Inside a beach bag sitting in direct sun, temperatures can exceed 55°C — leading to significant breakdown in as little as one hour.

Here's something the cool bag industry won't tell you: ice packs are also a problem.
Sunscreen is an emulsion - a carefully engineered blend of oil and water held together by emulsifiers. When it freezes, ice crystals physically rupture that structure. When it thaws, the oil and water phases don't always return to where they started.
The result is uneven UV filter distribution - patchy protection that looks fine in the bottle but leaves gaps on your skin. We call this the Broken Shield Effect™️.
